Expressionism is a style of art in which the subject matter is abstracted to reflect the artist's feelings or state of mind regarding the subject. This is not a totally abstract form, it is still representational, however, what is being represented is being expressed thru the artist's feelings. An expressionistic self-portrait is an abstracted vision the artist has about her emotional state or emotional self. A landscape, or a scene, is abstracted to reveal how the artist feels about it. Edvard Munch's "Scream," Kathie Kollwitz's woodcut "The Mothers" and her coal drawing "Greeting Death As A Friend," Vincent Van Gogh's "Wheat Field With Crows," Marianne Von Werefkin's "Self Portrait," and Gabrielle Munter's "Schoolhouse," are icons of the form. Expressionism is not completely abstract art, however, it is also not realistic. It is reality abstracted to reflect thought, mood and feeling.
